Gutenberg the Mouse

Mr. Gutenberg's printing shop...

Gutenberg the Mouse is an installation art piece initially made for Print Week, an annual school gallery held around Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. The theme for Print Week 2024 was the Renaissance, so creating this installation honoring the invention of the printing press only seemed fitting.

I would like to point out the hand-knitted blanket hanging from the ladder in the bottom right corner. I used sewing needles and thread to knit this tiny piece.

Another detail I would like to point out is the window. Among other materials, I created it using 3D paint and a plastic sheet, giving the design the appearance of wrought iron. A fun easter egg is that I used one of Rembrandt’s pieces to inspire the window design. Dr. Faustus in his Study, 1652.

Mr Gutenberg’s Printing Shop has been selected for display at the Belskie Museum in Closter, NJ

Alarm clock reading nook...

For this project, I thrifted an alarm clock, took it apart piece by piece, and created a little reading nook for my mouse (Mr. Gutenberg) to drink his tea and read his freshly printed literature in peace.

Bedroom...

This project was created with a plywood and cardboard base. I also used many found trinkets that would otherwise be gathering dust on bookshelves to create a cozy atmosphere for the mouse bedroom.

Some notable details are the tiny hand-sculpted skull on the bed and the sewn bedding/ mattress.

This piece was made to fit into a bookshelf as a “book nook”. I love the cozy atmosphere the books forming the walls of the room create. I think they enhance the viewing experience of my miniatures, while my miniatures enhance the decorations on the bookshelf.

I was glad to create this installation because it offers Mr. Gutenberg a spot to rest between his many travels.
