These earrings were developed over the course of several weeks. I researched jewelry from the Byzantine Empire, scoured the collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and created a plethora of “mock-ups”, all with different designs.
The initial variations of the project were not made out of clay. I used metal mesh, thread, and tiny beads to try and replicate the beautiful golden appearance of some Medieval jewelry.
After realizing the mesh did not allow me to create as much detail as I wanted, I switched over to clay. I sketched out a different design but tried to stick with a golden color palette.
I soon came up with the concept of splitting the earring into mobile sections and decided to experiment with it. After a few trials and errors, I had a system that worked, and I moved on to designing the final product!
